community sponsored programs and activities

Along with programs for preschoolers and older children, there are a number of activities that are sponsored by the Township throughout the year for adults of all ages. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and programs are for participants ages 18 and older, and held at the Recreation Center, located adjacent to Bear Branch Park at 5200 Research Forest Drive in Cochran's Crossing. Fall 2016 Adult Programs & Activities

Tai Chi I - With tens of millions of participants, Tai Chi is the largest sport in the world. Anyone can do Tai Chi regardless of age or physical condition; no special equipment required. In Tai Chi, students ages 16 and older are introduced to all aspects of Tai Chi: forms, philosophy and self-defense. Classes held at the Rec Center. Class instructor is Sifu David Neighbors. Sifu David Neighbors studied Tai Chi for over 20 years, and martial arts for over 30 years. He is a member of the American Tai Chi Qigong Association, the Tai Chi for Health Community, and a certified Tai Chi for Diabetes instructor. Choose from Mondays 7:00 - 8:00 PM or Saturdays 9:00 - 10:00 AM - or attend twice weekly! Fees: Once a week $70 per month for residents, $80 per month for non-residents; twice weekly $120 per month for residents, $130 per month non-residents.

 

Tai Chi II - Traditional intermediate and advanced Tai Chi floor exercises for students who must be a current student in either Tai Chi I or Kung Fu. Classes held at the Rec Center. Classes immediately follow Tai Chi I, on Mondays from 8:00 - 8:30 PM, or on Saturdays 10:00 - 10:30 AM. Fee: $35 for residents once weekly, $40 for non-residents; $60 for residents twice weekly, $70 non-residents.tai chi in the woodlands

 

Northern Fist Martial Arts - Kung fu has been used for centuries as a means of promoting a strong mind and general health. Students will be instructed in traditional Chinese forms, applications, and two-man sets. Monthly topics include strikes, kicks, take-downs and joint locks. Meets Saturdays, 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM. FEE: $85 per month for residents, $95 for non-residents.

 

Looking for a little friendly competition? The Woodlands Parks & Recreation Department offers Adult 7v7 Soccer Leagues; Adult Drop-In Soccer 11v11 pick up matches; Adult Flag Football League with 20 person rosters, eight regular season games and playoff champion prizes awarded; Adult Softball League with 20 Person team rosters, eight regular season games and playoffs, along with league prizes awarded; Adult Men's Basketball Monday Night League utilizing UIL/NCAA guidelines, two 20-minute half games, eight weeks of regular games plus playoffs, and league champion prizes awarded; plus Men's and Women's Doubles Tennis Leagues. Total Body Fitness - Classes consisting of strength training using free weights and body weight training as well as cardio. Fee is for unlimited classes per month. Students (ages 18 and up) may attend morning or evening, or both! Classes held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:00 - 9:45 AM, and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings September - December from 7:00 - 7:45 PM at Harper's Landing Park. Fee: $65 per person, per month for residents, $75 for non-residents.

 

Another Mother Running - Coaches Dan Green and Elizabeth Webb will be there every step to support and motivate runners ages 20 and up, teaching the essentials to establish solid body mechanics, proper technique, and develop running speed and endurance. Appropriate warm-up/cool down and stretching will be implemented during each session to develop the skills needed to be a successful runner. Coached by Dan Green, longtime resident and track/cross country coach and teacher of 45 years in The Woodlands. Meets 9:00 - 10:00 AM Tuesdays at Terramont Park and Thursdays at Windvale Park, September - December. Fee: $80 per person, per month for residents, $90 for non-residents.

Brenda Seneca teaches Country Western Dancing, Ballroom Dancing and Swing/Jitterbug Dancing. All dance classes held at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II (see map below).

 

Country Western Dancing - Have fun dancing to some of your favorite songs. It's great exercise and tons of fun for everyone (ages 16 & up)! Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, September 6 - October 11. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, October 18 - November 29 (Please note, no class on November 22) from 6:30 - 7:30 PM.

Ballroom Dancing - Get introduced to widely used dances in both smooth and Latin styles, such as the Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha-Cha. The class will also teach leading and following (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, September 6 - October 11. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, October 18 - November 29 (Please note, no class on November 22) from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Swing/Jitterbug Dancing - Join in the fun as you are introduced to the basic step and patterns of East Coast Swing; learn leading and following skills as well (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, September 6 - October 11. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, October 18 - November 29 (Please note, no class on November 22) from 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

H2O Deep Water Program - This is a low-impact water aerobics class for those ages 18 and older where all fitness levels are welcome. You will move from one end of the pool to the other working on your whole body. Meets Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 8:45 - 9:45 AM September 7 - 30 at the Creekwood Pool. Monthly Fees: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents.

 

Aqua Body Weight Program - This program is a low- and high-impact water aerobics class for adults ages 18 and older, taking the weight room to the water. Build strength, endurance and improve your cardiovascular fitness and flexibility levels, all at your own pace. No special equipment required. Four successive sessions; meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Session I September 7 - 30 at the Creekwood Pool from 8:45 - 9:45 AM, Session II October 3 - 28, Session III November 2 - 18, 29 & 30, Session IV December 2 - 14 from 8:30 - 9:30 AM at the CISD Natatorium. Sessions I, II & III Fees: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents; Session IV Fees: $35/person for residents $40/person for non-residents. Attend all four sessions for $130 per person ($140 for non-residents).

 

Aqua Body Deep Water Program - This is a low-impact water aerobics class for those ages 18 and older where all fitness levels are welcome. You will move from one end of the pool to the other working on your whole body. Receive a mile T-shirt every quarter. Four successive sessions; meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 - 10:00 AM. Session I September 6 - 29, Session II October 4 - 29, Session III November 1 - 17 & 29, Session IV December 1 - 15. Sessions I, II & III Fees: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents; Session IV Fees: $35/person for residents $40/person for non-residents at the CISD Natatorium. Attend all five sessions for $130 per person ($140 for non-residents).

 

scuba lessons in the woodlands, txScuba Diving - Would you like your child to become scuba certified, without paying resort rates on your next vacation? Learn how to scuba dive right here at home. All equipment is provided during class instruction, and at the end of the course, participants will receive all materials and cards certifying them as an open-water diver. Each five-day/two-week course meets on Friday from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II, then one weekend at the Shadowbend Pool from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 - 5:00 PM on Sunday; the following weekend at Blue Lagoon in Huntsville. One session left this fall - August 27 - 29 and September 2 - 4. Fees: ages 10 - 11 $395, ages 12 & up $295 for residents, $305 for non-residents.

"Vamos a Hablar" - Let's Talk - Margarita Chavez, author of the book, I Say Hola, You Say Hello teaches classes at the Rec Center that concentrate on conversational Spanish in an audio-visual format to students ages 18 & older. No materials required. Beginners Classes are held Mondays from 6:30 - 7:30 PM, and Fridays, from 4:30 - 5:30 PM; Beginners II Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 PM, and Wednesdays from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Intermediate I Classes are held Mondays 5:30 - 6:30 PM and Wednesdays 5:30 - 7:00 PM; Intermediate II Classes are held Mondays 7:30 - 9:00 PM and Friday, 5:30 - 6:30 PM; and Advanced Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. FEE: $45 per person for residents, $50 for non-residents, per month. Please register by September 1st to participate in the Fall Spanish program! Spanish Club - This club is for those who are fluent in the Spanish language. Current events will be discussed, Spanish soap operas critiqued and more! Meetings are led by Margarita Chavez on Wednesdays 7:00 - 8:30 PM. FEE: $25 per month for residents, $30 per month for non-residents.
