Along with programs for preschoolers and older children, there are a number of activities that are sponsored by the Township throughout the year for adults of all ages. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and programs are for participants ages 18 and older. Additional programs may be available; for more information, call Parks and Recreation at 281 210-3950.

Winter-Spring 2018 Adult Programs & Activities

woodlands area adult sports leaguesRegistration for these classes and applicable fees can be paid online at The Woodlands Township Parks & Rec. registration page. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and programs are for participants ages 18 & older.

 

Jazzercise - This high intensity dance workout mixes modern moves with strength training. Set to top 40 music, Dance Mixx targets the three major muscle groups for a full body workout! Open to ages 16 and up; Jazzercise is held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch from 9:00 - 10:00 AM on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 6:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays (times listed are for January - May, and are subject to change for summer months). Fees: $56 per month when signed up for a full year; $68 per month when signed up for six months. No joining fees when signing up through the Parks & Recreation Department. Take a single class for $15.

 

20/20/20 Cardio/Weights/Stretching - Held at the Recreation Center at Rob Fleming, Triathlon/Marathon coach Sandra Sutherland teaches the benefit of heart health during cardio, resistance training to help bones and overall strength and wellness, and stretches to create long, lean muscles to help with the prevention of injury. Supplies needed: mat and two free weights comfortable enough to maintain for 20 minutes. Three sessions to choose from, all on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:00 AM: January 15 - February 5; February 12 - March 5; or March 19 - April 9. Fee: $60 per person, per session for residents; $70 for non-residents.

Pickleball Play Days - Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Get out and play the fastest growing sport in America. Sign up for the whole season or just come out for a drop-in play day! Thursdays from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the Shadowbend Park tennis courts; January 18 - May 24. Fees: daily drop-in, $5, or $40 for residents for the whole season, $45 for non-residents.

 

pickle ball in the woodlands areaIntro to Pickleball - Learn how to dink, serve, volley and score! After this introduction class you will be able to play a basic beginner pickleball game! Learn proper grip, position, rules and court etiquette. Choose from eight dates, all held from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Meadowlake Park tennis courts: January 16, 30, February 13, 27, April 3, 17, May 1, or May 15. Fee: $30 per person for residents, $35 for non-residents.

 

Pickleball 101 Clinics - The clinic will introduce: game format, rules, positioning, strokes, serve, scoring, and strategy. The clinic will allow the students to learn the game and have playtime. Choose from four, three-day sessions: January 22, 24, and 26; February 19, 21, and 23; April 9, 11, and 13; or May 7, 9 and 11, all from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Meadowlake Park tennis courts. Fee: $90 per person, per session for residents, $100 for non-residents.

 

Pickleball 201 Classes - This five-week class will get you to the next level of your pickleball game! Each week is full of vital information needed to increase your skill and technique. Learn strategies, paddle tracking, snap volleys, blocking and much more. Classes held at the tennis courts at Meadowlake Park from 9:00 - 11:00 AM on January 29, 31, February 2, 7, 9; February 28, March 2, 5, 7, 9; April 18, 20, 23, 25, 27; or May 16, 18, 21, 23, 25. Fee: $150 per person, per session for residents, $160 for non-residents.

 

Pickleball Doubles Communication - Learn effective doubles strategies with a partner! Learn proper communication, when to spot a point opportunity, and stacking and isolation strategies. Classes held at the tennis courts at Meadowlake Park from 9:00 - 11:00 AM on January 18, February 8; March 8; April 5; or May 10. Fee: $80 per pair, per class for residents, $90 for non-resident pairs.

Tai Chi I - With tens of millions of participants, Tai Chi is the largest sport in the world. Anyone can do Tai Chi regardless of age or physical condition; no special equipment required. In Tai Chi, students ages 16 and older are introduced to all aspects of Tai Chi: forms, philosophy and self-defense. Class instructor is Sifu David Neighbors. Sifu David Neighbors studied Tai Chi for over 20 years, and martial arts for over 30 years. He is a member of the American Tai Chi Qigong Association, the Tai Chi for Health Community, and a certified Tai Chi for Diabetes instructor. Choose from Mondays 7:00 - 8:00 PM or Saturdays 9:30 - 10:30 AM - or attend twice weekly! Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: Once a week $70 per month for residents, $80 per month for non-residents; twice weekly $120 per month for residents, $130 per month non-residents.

 

Tai Chi II - Traditional intermediate and advanced Tai Chi floor exercises for students who must be a current student in either Tai Chi I or Kung Fu. Classes held on Mondays from 7:00 - 8:00 PM, or on Saturdays 9:30 - 10:30 AM. Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: Once a week $70 per month for residents, $80 per month for non-residents; twice weekly $120 per month for residents, $130 per month non-residents.

 

tai chi in the woodlandsTai Chi III - Students ages 18 and up learn to increase the benefits of Tai Chi through traditional weapons training: saber, sword, no, spear, and fan. Students are also introduced to push hands and self defense. Classes held on Mondays from 8:00 - 8:30 PM, or on Saturdays 10:35 - 11:05 AM. Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: $35 for residents once weekly, $40 for non-residents; $70 for residents twice weekly, $80 non-residents.

 

Tai Chi IV - Group Tai Chi practices for students ages 18 and up. Classes held on Mondays from 7:00 - 8:00 PM, or on Saturdays 9:00 - 10:00 AM. Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: $35 for residents once weekly, $40 for non-residents; $70 for residents twice weekly, $80 non-residents.

 

Northern Fist Martial Arts - Kung fu has been used for centuries as a means of promoting a strong mind and general health. Students ages 16 and up will be instructed in traditional Chinese forms, applications, and two-man sets. Monthly topics include strikes, kicks, take-downs and joint locks. Meets Saturdays, 11:05 AM - 12:05 PM at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. FEE: $70 per month for residents, $80 for non-residents.

 

Qigong and Chikung - Instruction in traditional Chinese energy work. Students learn the fundamentals of Quigong in order to clear the mind and self heal. For students ages 18 and up. Classes held on Saturdays 8:00 - 9:00 AM. Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: $35 for residents once weekly, $40 for non-residents.

 

Sunset Yoga - Relax as the sun goes down and create mindfulness with meditation, breathing and focus on complete body awareness. 200HR Certified instructor Sandra Sutherland creates a flow of poses to help relax tense or sore muscles and leave students ages 18 and up in a state of rejuvenation! Supplies needed: Mat and pillow or bolsters. Held at the Recreation Center at Rob Fleming on Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:00 PM. Choose from March 22 - April 12, or April 19 - May 10. Fee: $60 per session for residents, $70 for non-residents.

Country Western Dancing - Have fun dancing to some of your favorite songs. It's great exercise and tons of fun for everyone (ages 16 & up)! Beginners class will meet Mondays, January 22 - February 26. Intermediates will meet Mondays, March 5 - April 16 from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM. No class on March 12. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Ballroom Dancing - Get introduced to widely used dances in both smooth and Latin styles, such as the Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha-Cha. The class will also teach leading and following (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Mondays, January 22 - February 26. Intermediates will meet Mondays, March 5 - April 16 from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM. No class on March 12. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Swing/Jitterbug Dancing - Join in the fun as you are introduced to the basic step and patterns of East Coast Swing; learn leading and following skills as well (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Mondays, January 22 - February 26. Intermediates will meet Mondays, March 5 - April 16 from 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM. No class on March 12. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Brenda Seneca teaches Country Western Dancing, Ballroom Dancing and Swing/Jitterbug Dancing. Partners encouraged, but not required.

water workouts for adultsAqua Body Weight Program - This program is a low- and high-impact water aerobics class for adults ages 18 and older, taking the weight room to the water. Build strength, endurance and improve your cardiovascular fitness and flexibility levels, all at your own pace. No special equipment required. Meets Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 8:45 - 9:45 AM, January 8 - 31, February 2 - 28, March 2 - 28, and April 2 - 20 at the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah; April 23 - 30 (to complete April session), and May 2 - 25 at the Ridgewood Pool. Fee: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents. Attend all five sessions for $160 per person ($175 for non-residents).

 

Aqua Body Deep Water Program - This is a low-impact water aerobics class for all ages where all fitness levels are welcome. You will move from one end of the pool to the other working on your whole body. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 - 10:00 AM, January 9 - 30, February 1 - 27, March 1 - 29, or April 3 - 19, at the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah. Monthly Fees: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents. December session is $35/40; attend all four sessions for $130 per person ($140 for non-residents).

 

Aqua Yoga - Take yoga to a whole new level! Students ages 16 and up will learn to hold their balance on the water while going through the yoga moves. If you love yoga on land, see what yoga on the water is all about! Limited mats available, so you must sign up. No walk-ins. Classes held in two sessions: April 3, 10, 17, 24, or May 1, 8, 15, 22, at the Ridgewood Pool from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. FEE: $30 per month for residents, $40 for non-residents.

 

swimming and stroke lessons in the woodlandsCoach Russell Swim Clinics - Knowledgeable coaches with years of experience focus on the proper foundations of swimming to provide a solid base to build correct stroke technique. Proper technique will be taught on each swimming stroke, all turns and starts. Swimmers ages 5 and up will also swim enough to increase their aerobic and anaerobic capacities. The number of participants are limited to allow each swimmer to receive personal attention and room to properly practice. This clinic fits many swimmers' needs, such as improving strokes for swim team, triathlon training, and recreation. Class maximum is 32 participants. Held on Saturdays and Sundays at the Forestgate Pool. Session I: January 20 - February 18; ages 8 - 17 from 2:30 - 4:00 PM, and 18+ from 1:00 - 2:30 PM. Session II: April 7 - 29; ages 5 & 6 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM, ages 7 - 10 from 1:00 - 2:30 PM, and ages 11 & up from 2:30 - 4:00 PM. Fee: $175 per person, per session for residents, $185 for non-residents.

scuba lessons in the woodlands, txScuba Diving - Would you like to become scuba certified, without paying resort rates on your next vacation? Learn how to scuba dive right here at home. All equipment is provided during class instruction, and at the end of the course, participants will receive all materials and cards certifying them as an open-water diver. Each five-day/two-week course meets on Friday from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II, then one weekend at the Ridgewood Pool from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 - 5:00 PM on Sunday; the following weekend at Blue Lagoon in Huntsville. Classes held May 11 - 13 and May 19 - 20. Fees: $340 for residents, $350 for non-residents.

Spanish Club - This club is for those who are fluent in the Spanish language. Current events will be discussed, Spanish soap operas critiqued and more! Meetings are led by Margarita Chavez at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch on Mondays 7:30 - 9:00 PM. FEE: $30 per month for residents, $35 per month for non-residents.

 

"Vamos a Hablar" - Let's Talk - Margarita Chavez, author of the book, I Say Hola, You Say Hello teaches classes at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch that concentrate on conversational Spanish in an audio-visual format to students ages 18 & older. No materials required. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $55 for non-residents, per month. After September, new students, contact instructor at [email protected] to establish level, and for class information prior to sign up.
