community sponsored programs and activities

Along with programs for preschoolers and older children, there are a number of activities that are sponsored by the Township throughout the year for adults of all ages. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and programs are for participants ages 18 and older, and held at the Recreation Center, located adjacent to Bear Branch Park at 5200 Research Forest Drive in Cochran's Crossing. Additional programs may be available; for more information, call Parks and Recreation at 281 210-3900.

Spring 2012 Adult Programs & Activities

As a mom of three young daughters, Erica personally understands the challenges of fitting exercise and good nutrition into a busy life. To register for the "Get Fit With Erica" Courses, and for more information about Running Coach Erica Falcon, visit TrainWithFalconFitClubs.com. All classes are held at the Rec Center located adjacent to Bear Branch Park at 5200 Research Forest Drive in Cochran's Crossing (except Wednesday Night Track & Hill Training).

EZ8 Running - Lose weight, decrease body fat and fit into your skinny clothes again! Adults can get group support, accountability and the fun you need with workouts tailored to your fitness level. Free childcare included. Choose to attend twice a week or three times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:00 PM. FEE: 2x/month is $149 per month, 3x/month is $159 per month, per person, plus one-time $25 registration fee.

Wednesday Night Track - Speedwork Customized to You! Runners ages 15 & older can get the most out of their limited speedwork hours and become a faster runner; whether you're a 5K runner, a marathoner, or a triathlete! Class includes T-shirt, water bottle, class blog and individualized stats. Childcare is not available. Meets on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:00 PM, beginning January 11 at the Rec Center, then the Knox Junior High School track thereafter. FEE: $59 per person for the first month, $45 monthly for returning runners.

Hill & Strength Training! - Designed with the distance runner in mind, to increase running speed, power and agility, but also improve muscle tone and strength and ward off injury. This class is for runners ages 16 & older. Free childcare included. Class includes T-shirt and water bottle. Meets on Tuesdays from 9:00 - 10:00 AM, beginning January 12 at Terramont Park. FEE: $59 per person for the first month, $45 monthly for returning runners.

Woodlands Youth Running Club - Share your love of running with your child, and help develop a healthy habit that will last for life! This program is designed for boys and girls (ages 5 - 13) of all fitness and experience levels. Kids will learn about the benefits of running and proper form, have fun, win cool prizes, take part in fitness challenges and train to complete a season-closing 1-mile, 5K, 10K or 10-mile race (dependent on age and fitness level), complete with finishing medal, team shirt and awards party! First meeting January 10 at the Recreation Center from 4:30 - 6:00 PM, regular weekly meetings will be held in different locations. Call the Rec Center for more information: 281 210-3950. FEE: $129 per person, $10 discount for additional siblings.

USAT Coach Sandra Sutherland Triathlon Classes

Tri Training On the Go - Too busy to attend a class each week? Have your basic workout plans e-mailed to you. Participants ages 14 & older will meet one time at The Rec Center on Saturday, February 18 at 2:00 PM for personal instruction and assessment then train wherever you are. FEE: $150 per person.

Marathon Training To Go - This 20-week class provides Internet training for a first-time marathoner or a seasoned athlete who is ready to avoid injury by training safely. Participants receive the best information, support and details for staying strong. Take the schedule and workouts anywhere you go; only three runs and two days of cross training! FEE: $100 per person.

Triathlon Training Program - Beginner - This class covers swimming, running, cycling, nutrition, endurance and strength, as well as safety issues and mental preparation. Must register in advance. Class meets Mondays at 8:00 AM and Wednesdays at 6:00 PM, February 27 - May 2, beginning at the CISD Natatorium. FEE: $300 for residents, $310 for non-residents.

Triathlon First-Timer's Review & Swim - Designed to review first-time triathletes ages 14 & older on basic fundamentals involved with a sprint-distance triathlon. Will include a checklist for the CB&I TRI. Must register in advance. Class meets Saturday, April 28 from 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM at Northshore Park. FEE: $45 per person for residents, $50 for non-residents.

Tri Swimming - A 10-week training program for those ages 14 & older at any level of fitness that focuses on building swimming strength with training and lectures. Class includes weekly training schedule and lectures specific to open water triathlons. Also includes specific drills and techniques to improve open water swimming. Held Mondays, starting February 27 from 8:30 - 9:30 AM at the CISD Natatorium. FEE: $125 per person for residents, $135 for non-residents.

MS-150 Training for Endurance - Planning to ride in the MS 150 on Saturday, April 17? Get the proper training to feel great at the finish. Participants will learn about building strength, fueling for the ride, caring for your bike, stretching and proper equipment to utilize for the two-day ride. Class includes 45-mile practice ride on Saturday, March 3. Kick-off meeting is Monday, January 23. FEE: $200 for residents, $210 for non-residents.

1,2,3, GO - This running program for beginners ages 16 & older is designed to help first-time runners participate in a 5K race, 10-mile race or half marathon. All phases meet weekly and review schedules. Program instructors are Jill Mitchell and Vicky Gilmor, RRCA-certifed running coaches. Phase 1 is a progression of walking and running up to five miles. This phase culminates with a five-mile run on Saturday, March 31. Registration fee includes running schedules, handouts, a stretching workshop, participation in a local 5K race, technical running shirt and a discount at a local running store. In Phase 3 runners will build upon training by adding speed workouts to increase distance and ability to allow the successful completion of a half marathon. Once selecting and registering for the half marathon of choice, runners will be provided a training schedule that will help prepare them to successfully cross the finish line. Orientation for both Phases 1 and 2 is Saturday, January 7, at 9:00 and 10:00 AM respectively at the Rec Center. Phase 1 will meet two times a week; choose either Tuesdays, January 10 - March 27 at 9:30 AM or Thursdays, January 12 - March 29 at 7:00 PM. Phase 2 will meet on Saturdays, January 14 - March 31 at 6:30 AM. Phase 3 depends on race selected by participant. All Phases meet at the Rec Center. FEES: Phase 1; $110 for residents, $120 for non-residents. Phase 2 & 3, $125 for residents, $135 for non-residents.

Tai Chi for Seniors - Students ages 55 & older are introduced to Tai Chi in a relaxed yet structured program. Training offered in the Eight Step Form, designed for people with limited mobility or space. This form does not contain the low stances or complex foot work found in the longer forms. Returning students will also learn the Beijing Short Form. Meets Saturdays, January - May from 10:15 - 11:15 AM at the Recreation Center. FEES: $40 per month for residents, $50 per month for non-residents.

Tai Chi Martial Arts (TCMA) - Learn the 200-year-old exercise that works every muscle group in the human body and helps reduce stress levels. Participants ages 16 & older will use movements which are designed to relax the mind and stretch the body. Class instructor is Sifu David Neighbors. Meets on Mondays, January - May from 7:15 - 8:15 PM and Saturdays, January - May from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at the Rec Center. FEE: $60 per month for residents, $70 per month for non-residents to attend once a week; $100 per month for residents, $110 per month for non-residents for twice a week.

Chinese Martial Arts - Also taught by Sifu David Neighbors, this practical self defense for those ages 13 & older is taught in a semi-private class, using a rotating curriculum. Topics will include blocks, strikes, kicks, and joint locks. Meets on Saturdays, January - May from 11:20 AM - 12:20 PM at the Rec Center. FEE: $60 per month for residents, $70 for non-residents.

Tough-n-Tone Fitness - This class for will have you having fun burning calories with fat-blasting, interval circuit training that will provide a great cardio workout while sculpting and toning your muscles. Before Work Fitness - Increase your health and fitness through functional and effective workouts led by a certified personal trainer. Group or one-on-one sessions with flexible scheduling available. Hoop Dance - Exercise that's more like child's play! This class for those ages 16 & older, will tone your body and build core muscle by involving multiple muscle groups. You do not need to be a natural athlete nor do you need prior experience. You only need a desire to try something different and an openness to learn new skills. Hoops are provided for use during class. Meets on Wednesdays at the Rec Center from 8:00 - 8:45 PM. Choose from two, four-week sessions: January 25 - February 15 or April 11 - May 2. FEE: $48 per person, per four-week session, $15 drop-ins as space allows.

Zumba - A calorie-burning blast that's full of fun and energy! Meets on Mondays, January 23 - February 27 from 10:30 - 11:15 AM and Wednesdays, January 25 - February 22 (No class held February 20) from 9:30 - 10:15 AM at the Rec Center. Also available Mondays, March 19 - April 16 from 10:30 - 11:15 AM and Wednesdays, March 21 - April 18 from 9:30 - 10:15 AM. FEE: $35 per person for once a week, $55 per person for twice a week.

Ashtang Yoga - Claire Wilson teaches Ashtang yoga, which energizes the body, increases strength and flexibility, while calming the mind, releasing tension and anxiety. The result is a light and strong body, a calm mind and higher energy levels. All participants are responsible for providing their own yoga mat. Classes held at the Rec Center from 7:00 - 8:15 PM on Tuesdays. Choose from two sessions: February 21 - April 3 (no class held the week of Spring Break), or April 10 - May 15. FEE: $60 per person, per session; $15 drop-in.

Yoga I & II and Prenatal Yoga - Thais Erthal teaches participants how to promote and improve overall well being with postures and exercises that stretch and strengthen the muscles while quieting and calming the mind. In prenatal yoga, you will also bond with the baby and prepare for the child's birth. Great for beginners and intermediate practitioners. Choose from two sessions which meet on Tuesdays and Fridays - January 24 - March 2 or March 6 - April 13 at the Rec Center. Yoga I & II begins at 8:45 AM, Prenatal at 10:00 AM. All participants are responsible for providing their own yoga mat. FEE: $120 for residents, $130 for non-residents, per session; $15 drop-in.

water workouts for adultsCORE/Yoga Training on Stand-Up Paddle Boards - Get fit with fantastic abs by joining the best core/yoga workout in the world! Work out on the serene water keeping all your core muscles in balance, using weights and the best Panga Boards for this class! Each class meets at the Riva Row Boat House. Choose from Fridays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 or 30, Mondays April 2, 9, 16, 23 or 30, or Tuesdays in May 1, 8, 15, 22 or 29. FEE: One lesson: $60 per person, or five lessons for $250.

Aqua Body Weight Program - This program is a low- and high-impact water aerobics class, taking the weight room to the water. Build strength, endurance and improve your cardiovascular fitness and flexibility levels, all at your own pace. No special equipment required. Meets Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, February 1 - 29, March 2 - 30, April 2 - 30 and May 2 - 25 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at the Natatorium or at the Creekwood Pool. FEE: $40 per person, per month or $160 for all months; $15 drop-in. Add Aqua Body Deep Water Program and pay only $200 for all sessions.

Aqua Body Deep Water Program - A great way to get your heart rate up and get in shape all year round. You'll keep your arms and legs moving through the water in an upright position making your way from one end to the other. This workout is not for everyone. For more information, please call Debbie Arnold 281 210-3900. All sessions held at the Natatorium, 8:45 - 10:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays: February 2 - 28, March 1 - 29, April 3 - 26 and May 1 - 24. FEE: $40 per person, per month or $160 for all months; $15 drop-in. Add Aqua Body Weight Program and pay only $200 for all sessions.

Water Resistance Walking Class - Walk against the current in the lazy river at the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center. Start out slow, but speed up as the class goes on. This class for swimmers ages 13 & older is not for people with knee or lower back problems. Held on Saturdays, May 5 - 26 9:00 - 10:00 AM. FEE: $35 per person.

Open Water Swim Day - Practice open water swimming in preparation for your next triathlon on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 7:30 AM at Northshore Park. No instruction, just swimming for those ages 14 & older. Long course (1.2 miles) and short course (500 meters) available. For long course, the last swimmer must enter water by 8:30 AM and exit water by 9:30 AM. For short course the last swimmer must enter water by noon and exit water by 12:30 PM. If swimming both courses, the last swimmer must start long course before 8:30 AM, then exit the water until the start of the short course. FEES: long course $40, short course $20, both courses $50, per person.

Triathlon Open Water Swim Clinic with TJ - Designed for athletes new to open water swimming to learn the challenges they will face in the CB&I TRI, TJ Fry instructs this clinic, great for first time triathletes ages 14 & older. Training materials and tips also included. Must register in advance! Clinic held Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at Northshore Park. FEE: $25 for residents, $30 for non-residents.

Maverick Athletic Company - Offering a wide range of courses in The Woodlands. TRX Suspension Training was born in the U.S. Navy and is a revolutionary method of leveraged body weight exercise. Participants safely perform hundreds of exercises that build power, strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, and prevent injuries, all at the intensity you choose. Classes held at 5:30 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays at Terramont Park. Sessions include January 3 - February 9, February 14 - March 22 and March 27 - May 3. FEES: $149 for 12 classes, $99 for six classes, $299 if you would like to keep the TRX straps used in the class. Also at Terramont Park, MAV Camps; Each boot camp session is an action-packed workout designed to challenge your fitness limits, energize your spirit and reinvigorate your routine. The camps include a strength and cardio routine, a challenging hill workout and a (hard)core balance and flexibility workout. How about Smack Down held at 8:15 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays at Town Green Park. Sessions include January 3 - February 9, February 14 - March 22 and March 27 - May 3. FEE: $105 per person. Or why not RxT – Runner's Cross Training held at Cattail Park; incorporating strength and flexibility drills designed to maximize athletic performance. A focus on speed and agility drills including a complete flexibility program that introduces PiYo, a fusion of Yoga and Pilates, and foam rolling techniques. Classes held at 5:30 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions include January 3 - February 9, February 14 - March 22 and March 27 - May 3. FEE: $89 per person. Bollywood Blast - Bollywood workout is a fun and easy calorie-burning workout dancing to the rhythms of Bollywood tunes. The songs are always changing, challenging, and fun. Held at the Rec Center, choose from these sessions: Mondays, Jan. 9 - Feb. 27 at 9:00 AM, Thursdays, Jan. 12 - Mar. 1 at 8:30 AM, Fridays, Jan. 13 - Mar. 2 at 6:00 PM, Mondays, Mar. 19 - May 7 at 9:00 AM, Thursdays, Mar. 22 - May 10 at 8:30 AM or Fridays, Mar. 23 - May 18 (no class held on April 6). FEE: $100 per person, per session for residents, $110 for non-residents, $15 daily drop-in.

rape defense coursesRape Aggression Defense - This program teaches women ages 16 & older how to be safe, stay safe and to protect yourself. This is a free class, but you must register. Taught by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Twelve-hour classes held January 16, 17, 23, 24 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM, February 8, 9, 15, 16 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, March 7, 8, 14, 15 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, April 14 & 21 from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM and May 7, 8, 14, 15 7:00 - 10:00 PM.

CPR, First Aid and AED Training - This American Heart Association CPR, First Aid, and AED Training course for those ages 12 & older will be held every second Saturday of the month at the Recreation Center. Upon completion of this four-hour course, individuals will be certified for two years. FEE: $ 65 per person.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices - This class will help you make good choices for your family while shopping and stocking the fridge and pantry. Evaluate what to send to school for your children and athletes. Learn about healthy carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals. Shop the grocery, eat out and pick the best for your family! Discuss food allergies, trends, shop the market and eat out for final exam! Led by Sandra Sutherland, fitness consultant. Class meets Wednesdays, January 18 - February 15 and again April 11 - May 9, from 11:00 AM - Noon. FEE: $50 for residents, $60 for non-residents.

writing coursesWriting Your Novel: From Idea to Marketplace - This course for writers taught by published author Curt Batson will cover choosing format, voice and tense; character development; story development; theme; and getting published. Ongoing online editing and critiquing available. Class meets Tuesdays, January 31 - March 6 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM. FEE: $150 per person.

Writing Your Screenplay: From Start to Finish - Also taught by published author Curt Batson, this course will teach format, character and story development and marketing to agents and producers. Learn to write concisely, including what to keep and what to cut. Class meets Tuesdays, January 31 - March 6 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM. FEE: $150 per person.

"Vamos a Hablar" - Let's Talk - Margarita Chavez, author of the book, I Say Hola, You Say Hello teaches classes at the Rec Center that concentrate on conversational Spanish in an audio-visual format. No materials required. Beginners and Advanced students may sign up anytime. Beginners Classes (Sombreros) are held Mondays from 5:30 - 6:30 PM and Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Intermediate Classes (Chile) are held on Mondays from 6:30 - 7:30 and Wednesday 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Advanced Beginner Classes (Cactus) are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. FEE: $45 per person for residents, $50 for non-residents. Contact the Recreation Center at 281 210-3950 for registration information.

Spanish Club - This club is for those who are fluent in the Spanish language. Current events will be discussed, Spanish soap operas critiqued and more! Meetings are led by Margarita Chavez on Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30 - 9:00 PM. FEE: $25 per month for residents, $30 per month for non-residents.
