community sponsored programs and activities

Along with programs for preschoolers and older children, there are a number of activities that are sponsored by the Township throughout the year for adults of all ages. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and programs are for participants ages 18 and older, and held at the Recreation Center, located adjacent to Bear Branch Park at 5200 Research Forest Drive in Cochran's Crossing. Summer 2017 Adult Programs & Activities

Tai Chi I - With tens of millions of participants, Tai Chi is the largest sport in the world. Anyone can do Tai Chi regardless of age or physical condition; no special equipment required. In Tai Chi, students ages 16 and older are introduced to all aspects of Tai Chi: forms, philosophy and self-defense. Class instructor is Sifu David Neighbors. Sifu David Neighbors studied Tai Chi for over 20 years, and martial arts for over 30 years. He is a member of the American Tai Chi Qigong Association, the Tai Chi for Health Community, and a certified Tai Chi for Diabetes instructor. Choose from Mondays 7:00 - 8:00 PM or Saturdays 9:00 - 10:00 AM - or attend twice weekly! Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: Once a week $70 per month for residents, $80 per month for non-residents; twice weekly $120 per month for residents, $130 per month non-residents.

 

Tai Chi II - Traditional intermediate and advanced Tai Chi floor exercises for students who must be a current student in either Tai Chi I or Kung Fu. Classes immediately follow Tai Chi I, on Mondays from 8:00 - 8:30 PM, or on Saturdays 10:00 - 10:30 AM. Held at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. Fees: $35 for residents once weekly, $40 for non-residents; $60 for residents twice weekly, $70 non-residents.

 

tai chi in the woodlandsChen Style Tai Chi - Students (ages 7 & up) will learn self-defense, discipline, how to cultivate inner energy and Tai Chi philosophy. Curriculum includes Tai Chi forms, applications and weapons, including bow and sticks, swords and spears. Class open to both youth and adult students. Held on Tuesdays at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. Fees: $120 per person, per month for residents, $130 for non-residents.

 

Northern Fist Martial Arts - Kung fu has been used for centuries as a means of promoting a strong mind and general health. Students will be instructed in traditional Chinese forms, applications, and two-man sets. Monthly topics include strikes, kicks, take-downs and joint locks. Meets Saturdays, 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch. FEE: $80 per month for residents, $90 for non-residents.

 

The Fit Refinery Boot Camps - This is a challenging, high intensity fitness class for adults ages 18 & up. This class will incorporate circuit training and pop aerobics for a fun twist. If you want to sweat it off this is your chance. Choose from two sessions: June 5 - July 15, or July 17 - August 21. Fees: $160 per session for residents, $170 for non-resident. Pick any two days listed below!

water workouts for adultsAqua Body Weight Program - This program is a low- and high-impact water aerobics class for adults ages 18 and older, taking the weight room to the water. Build strength, endurance and improve your cardiovascular fitness and flexibility levels, all at your own pace. No special equipment required. Meets Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 9:00 - 10:00 AM, June 5 - 30, July 3 - 31, August 2 - 25, or September ($40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents) at Ridgewood Pool. Attend all four sessions for $120 per person ($130 for non-residents).

 

Aqua Body Deep Water Program - This is a low-impact water aerobics class for all ages where all fitness levels are welcome. You will move from one end of the pool to the other working on your whole body. Meets Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 7:30 - 8:30 AM, June 5 - 30, July 3 - 31, August 2 - 25, or September 6 - 29, at Ridgewood Pool. Monthly Fees: $40/person for residents $45/person for non-residents. Attend all four sessions for $120 per person ($130 for non-residents).

 

Water Resistance Walking Class - Walk against the current in the lazy river at the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center. Start out slow, but speed up as the class goes on. This class is for adults ages 18 & up; not for people with knee or lower back problems. Meets Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30 - 10:00 AM, June 3 - 29, July 1 - 29 (no class July 4), or August 1 - 19. Fee: $60 per month for residents, $65 for non-residents, or $45 per month for Saturdays only. Or, sign up for all three months for $150 for residents, $160 for non-residents.

 

Aqua Yoga - Take yoga to a whole new level! Students ages 12 and up will learn to hold their balance on the water while going through the yoga moves. If you love yoga on land, see what yoga on the water is all about! Limited mats available, so you must sign up. No walk-ins. Choose from two sessions: June 5 - 29 or July 3 - 27, on Mondays and Thursdays,at the Shadowbend Pool from 8:45 - 9:45 AM. FEE: $55 per month for residents, $65 for non-residents.

 

scuba lessons in the woodlands, txScuba Diving - Would you or your child like to become scuba certified, without paying resort rates on your next vacation? Learn how to scuba dive right here at home. All equipment is provided during class instruction, and at the end of the course, participants will receive all materials and cards certifying them as an open-water diver. Each five-day/two-week course meets on Friday from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II, then one weekend at the Shadowbend Pool from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 - 5:00 PM on Sunday; the following weekend at Blue Lagoon in Huntsville. Choose from May 12 - 14 and May 19 - 21; June 2 - 4 and June 9 - 11; July 21 - 23 and July 28 - 30; August 4 - 6 and August 11 - 13; August 18 - 20 and August 25 - 27; or September 8 - 10 and September 15 - 17. Fees: ages 10 - 11 $395, ages 12 & up $295 for residents, $305 for non-residents.

Country Western Dancing - Have fun dancing to some of your favorite songs. It's great exercise and tons of fun for everyone (ages 16 & up)! Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, May 23 - June 20. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, July 18 - August 15 at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II (see map below) from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Ballroom Dancing - Get introduced to widely used dances in both smooth and Latin styles, such as the Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha-Cha. The class will also teach leading and following (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, May 23 - June 20. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, July 18 - August 15 at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II (see map below) from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

 

Swing/Jitterbug Dancing - Join in the fun as you are introduced to the basic step and patterns of East Coast Swing; learn leading and following skills as well (ages 16 & up). Beginners class will meet Tuesdays, May 23 - June 20. Intermediates will meet Tuesdays, July 18 - August 15 at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive, Building II (see map below) from 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM. FEE: $50 per person for residents, $60 for non-residents.

Spanish Club - This club is for those who are fluent in the Spanish language. Current events will be discussed, Spanish soap operas critiqued and more! Meetings are led by Margarita Chavez at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch on Wednesdays 7:00 - 8:30 PM. FEE: $25 per month for residents, $30 per month for non-residents.

 

"Vamos a Hablar" - Let's Talk - Margarita Chavez, author of the book, I Say Hola, You Say Hello teaches classes at the Recreation Center at Bear Branch that concentrate on conversational Spanish in an audio-visual format to students ages 18 & older. No materials required. FEE: $45 per person for residents, $50 for non-residents, per month. After June, new students, contact instructor at [email protected] to establish level, and for class information prior to sign up.
