Avalon Park is approximately two blocks in to the neighborhood of Grogan's Forest, just north of Research Forest Drive. This unique area park, though small in size, boasts the Township's only public Bocce Ball court and Horseshoe Pitching Pit. Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the two lighted tennis courts which are also available at Avalon Park, and parents of young children may find the small play area favorable to their kids. Visitors to the park may be surprised to learn Avalon Park is actually a part of the Village of College Park, one of only six parks throughout the Village.
Bocce Ball (or Bocci, or Boccie) is a sport belonging to the boules sport family, with an ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire. Developed into its present form in Italy (where it is called Bocce, the plural of the Italian word boccia which means "bowl"), it is played around Europe and also in many other countries that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North and South America, initially amongst the migrants themselves but slowly becoming more popular with their descendants and the wider community. The sport is also very popular in the former Yugoslavian countries of Slovenia, Croatia (predominantly in the coastal regions), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro.
