The Woodlands Pathway System

Connecting Residents with The Woodlands

The Woodlands Pathways connect residents to individual neighborhoods, parks, schools and Shopping Centers. They are approximately 48" wide, which is much wider than the average neighborhood sidewalk and they do not pass through anyone's front yard. The sidewalks, or pathways as they are commonly known, do run next to many streets yet they are typically seperated by 15 to 20 feet of grass and or trees. When extending through neighborhoods (Villages) the pathways pass along the backside of some houses with various street crossings that are well marked. The pathways are all multi-use including roller bladers, bicyclist, hikers, wheelchairs, and of course, walkers, and joggers. In order to provide a safe environment for all pathway users, The Woodlands Parks and Recreation Department has the following recommendations:

  • Show courtesy and respect to other pathway users at all times.
  • Stay to the right side of pathway.
  • Pass other users to their left whenever possible.
  • Use common sense and avoid putting yourself or others at risk.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and clean up after them.
  • Please yield to wheelchairs, no matter who has the right of way.

What kind of Traffic is allowed on the Pathways?
Texas legislation provides that electric scooters and gas scooters with engines less than 40cc may be ridden on public thoroughfares, provided that the speed limit does not exceed 35 mph. No license is required but scooters must follow the same regulations as those that apply to bicycles. Counties and municipalities are allowed to pass their own regulations. The streets in The Woodlands are county roads and do fall under the provisions of the new law. Determination of what is and what is not legal on the streets is the responsibility of the law enforcement agencies that have jurisdiction. General questions should be referred to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, or call the NON EMERGENCY phone number 281 297-6500.

The Woodlands Pathways however, are owned by The Woodlands Township and are categorized differently. Motorized vehicles (except those used for the purposes of maintenance by the Township or their contractors) are prohibited from using the pathways. The only exceptions are motorized wheelchairs.

The Woodlands Township, Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains over 140 miles of hike and bike paths, more than 120 parks, 14 swimming pools, and more than 1,800 acres of open space for Woodlands Residents to enjoy.

Hike and Bike Pathways are specifically for non-motorized vehicular traffic for residents and their guests to enjoy a variety of activities, such as walking, jogging, bicycling and roller-blading. The Pathways are also conveniently linked throughout neighborhoods and Villages to parks and area shopping centers.

The Public Parks in The Woodlands offer residents opportunities for recreation and socializing, and relaxilng. The Woodlands Parks contain various amenities such as swimming pools, picnic pavilions with barbecue grills, basketball courts, playground equipment, sports fields, volleyball and tennis courts.
