Annual CB&I Triathlon The Woodlands

The 13th annual Woodlands CB&I Tri will held April 30, 2016. As one of the premier multi-sport events in the region, the ever popular Woodlands Triathlon is produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department, offering high-caliber competition, first-rate race management and a scenic course. As with years past, the race is a sanctioned USA Triathlon (USAT) event and features a field of 1,300 participants (easily filled). Each year's participants range from beginners to nationally ranked triathletes, with several potential contenders on a waiting list. This event has reached capacity and sold out nearly every year in the past years, with the 2016 event selling out in just 11 days!

Registration for the 2016 event opened January 1, 2016; once registration for the CB&I Tri is full, persons wishing to participate may be added to the 2016 CB&I Tri waiting list.

A waiting list has been started as of January 11, for the 2016 triathlon. If you would like to be placed on it, please send your request to races@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov,and you will receive future e-mails with instructions on how to proceed.

USAT&F SactionedThe Woodlands CB & I Tri event has earned a Top 10 placement in the USAT South Midwest Region for Sprint Distance Triathlons in 2004 and was designated as the USAT South Midwest Region Sprint State Championships for 2007. The event culminates with a festive awards party featuring music, great food, beverages and door prizes.


The minimum age for participation in the CB&I Tri - The Woodlands is 13. Registration will be available online beginning January 1, 2016; In 2016, early registration cost for the 2016 race is ($110) for individuals, ($175) for relay teams and was available through January 3. Regular registration costs are ($120) for individuals, ($185) for relay teams and was available January 4 - until sold out. Registration fees listed here are for informational purposes only, and are subject to change without notice. All registrations must be completed by the registration deadline in late April, 2016 at midnight. Be sure to register as early as possible; the 1,300-person field has sold out every year since 2005.   • Swim distance: 500-meter open water swim in Lake Woodlands
  • Bike distance: 15 miles throughout The Woodlands
  • Run distance: 5 kilometers through Town Center

Each year through efforts of coordinators, participants and volunteers, 80 percent or more of waste on race day was diverted to recycling and compostable businesses. For this year's event, race organizers will continue to improve their environmental responsibility efforts by asking participants, spectators and volunteers to ride-share or carpool to the event. Held the first Saturday in May (or on the case of 2016, the final Saturday of April) each year, the 2016 Tri The Woodlands began at 7:00 AM on Saturday, April 30 at Northshore Park located at 2505 Lake Woodlands Drive, 77381. The TRI - The Woodlands is set to take place Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Northshore Park. 1,300 registered participants are expected. Please be aware that roads will be affected along Research Forest Drive through The Woodlands Town Center, Lake Woodlands Drive and Woodlands Parkway. Outside lanes will be closed for the bike and run routes from 5:30 AM to approximately 10:00 AM. Typical lane closures include:

East and West
Woodlands Parkway
Research Forest Drive

North and South
Grogan's Mill Road
Branch Crossing
Six Pines Drive
Kuykendahl – to Woodlands Parkway & Bay Branch Drive
Gosling Road – to Shadowbend Drive and Research Forest

Lane Closures for Bike Route:

The bike route for the 2014 was shortened and began at Northshore Park, continued west in the left lane of westbound Lake Woodlands Drive to Sterling Ridge Drive. Riders used the Carlton Woods Roundabout and moved from the eastbound lanes to return east in the left lane of westbound Sterling Ridge Drive to Lake Woodlands Drive. This left only the right lane open for westbound traffic for the duration of the bike portion of the race. Most residents were able to leave their neighborhoods by turning right; left turns were not be permitted.

The inside lane of the following streets will be closed to automobile traffic from 6:00 to 10:30 AM to accommodate racers:

  • Lake Woodlands Drive: westbound from New Trails to Sterling Ridge –
    Anticipated reopening – 9:00 AM
  • Sterling Ridge: westbound to Carlton Woods Roundabout and eastbound from Roundabout to Old Sterling -
    Anticipated reopening – 9:30 AM
  • Lake Woodlands Drive: eastbound to Windward Cove -
    Anticipated reopening – 10:00 AM
  • Lake Woodlands Drive: Lake Woodlands Bridge (Windward Cove to Lake Front Circle) -
    Anticipated reopening – 10:30 AM

The only road closure for the bike course is on Lake Woodlands Drive Bridge with limited access between New Trails Drive and Lake Front Circle. Eastbound traffic for this closure will be rerouted to East Panther Creek Drive and westbound traffic will be detoured to Grogan's Mill Road. This closure has been consistent for the majority of the past 10 years. 

Lane Closures For Run Route: The running course for the CB&I TRI will be from Northshore Park along The Woodlands Waterway and there will be no lane or road closures for this portion of the race.

How Lanes are Closed: 
Montgomery County Sheriff Department will be responsible for closing and re-opening streets, they will do so in a manner ensuring runner and spectator safety. There will be police officer at every intersection along the race route. Please follow their instructions when approaching streets on the course. After the race starts the lanes will re-open on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed. 

  • To ensure runner and spectator safety, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office will be responsible for closing and re-opening streets.
  • There will be police officers at every intersection along the race route. Please follow their instructions.
  • The police officers will allow cars through when there is a safe opportunity.
  • Please allow extra time if you have somewhere to be on race day. Traffic flow should only be interrupted for 15 - 20 minutes until 10:30 AM.
  • The bicycle and run routes will impact the driveways for some businesses along those routes from early morning until 10:30 AM. Traffic will be diverted to minimize inconvenience to residents and patrons.

The foregoing information regarding routes and traffic impacts are based on the 2015 CB&I Triathlon and are subject to change for the 2016 CB&I Tri, with or without notice.
