Mandatory Water Restrictions issued for The Woodlands, Texas
Mandatory water restrictions have been initiated by The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency.
The restrictions include The Woodlands Municipal Utility Districts in Montgomery County,
according to James M. Stinson, P.E., general manager of The WJPA.
"Due to continued extreme hot and dry weather and unprecedented water demand, we have
initiated Stage 3 of our MUDs' Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan. This is a
MANDATORY WATER RESTRICTION NOTICE that limits outdoor irrigation to no more than two
days per week and no more than a total of one inch of potable water applied per week,"
said Stinson.
To reduce stress on the water supply system and allow adequate pressure for early morning
household needs, automatic irrigation timers should be set to complete all watering
cycles by 4 a.m. Residential and commercial customers with even numbered addresses
(0,2,4,6,8) are restricted to watering on Sundays and Thursdays; customers with odd
numbered addressed (1,3,5,7,9) are restricted to watering on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
Fines up to $200 per violation may be imposed for repeat offenders.
"Initiation of mandatory water restrictions is a matter of public health and safety. We
must provide water for essential household and business needs while ensuring there is
adequate supply for fire protection," said Stinson.
"Excessive lawn irrigation is the basis for our mandatory water restriction notice. With
our community's cooperation and compliance to the watering schedule, adequate water will
be available to meet our health and safety needs," said Stinson.
Water demand in The Woodlands set new peak volumes in 10 of the past 12 days, according
to Don Sarich, The Woodlands' division manager of the San Jacinto River Authority.
"The previous peak day was on August 2, 2008, at 33.3 million gallons. The total demand
for June 25, 2009, was 37.9 million gallons and for June 26 was 38.2 million gallons. The
current pumping capacity is 45.8 MGD. However, this is with all pumps running 24 hours
per day and no large mechanical failures," said Sarich.
